Founded at Yale University in 1832, skull and bones is one of the oldest secret societies in American history - and its reputation as mythic as the Freemasons, the Templars, and the Bavarian Illuminati. Some of the most powerful Americans who ever lived were Skull and Bones members, and chief among them was William howard Taft, the first bonesman elected President of the United States.

The legacy

Few families in America boast a Skull and Bones legacy as long or as legendary as the Tafts. William Howard taft's father co-founded the club, and three of Taft's four brothers were Bonesmen, as were both of Taft's sons.

While such family histories are oftentimes without controversy, Taft's decision to appoint two bonesmen to his presidential cabinet did arouse some suspicion.
